The Traditions Hawken Woodsman is a .50 caliber flintlock with a 28-inch octagonal blued barrel, not threaded, set in a hardwood stock. A hooked breech lets the barrel come out more easily for cleaning, double-set triggers allow a light release once set, and the rear hunting sight is click adjustable against a front iron sight. The standard sights give a long sighting plane down the octagonal flats.

The Hawken pattern is a hunting rifle, and Connecticut's muzzleloader season fits it: the opener is December 9, the minimum is .45 caliber, and both private land and state land are open to muzzleloaders, with state land limited to shotguns and muzzleloaders only. The 28-inch barrel helps in brush and in a stand, and the adjustable rear sight lets a hunter zero for whatever load he settles on before the season. Sunday hunting is private land only.
