DESCRIPTION
This Chester County Armory listing is for a Colt style Moderator made by S&H Arms. It is used, but in excellent condition, with only minor handling marks in the parkerization (see photos). It is made to the same specifications and dimensions as the original Colt Moderators. Finish matches extremely well to the original Colt gray. It is threaded in the standard 1/2X28.
The Colt Moderator was initially designed as a flash suppressor/sound moderator to help tame the large flash and sound signatures associated with the shorter barreled designs of the AR15/M16 class of weapons, specifically, the Colt Commando/CAR-15/XM177 versions. Extremely effective at reducing flash signatures and taming muzzle blasts, the Moderator also reduces sound levels by a few decibels. This change in sound makes the shorter Commando family of weapons, preferred by Special Forces troops during Vietnam, to sound similar to their full sized M16A1 rifle counterparts. Due to this small shift in sound reduction, ATF considers the Moderator a sound suppressor, and all NFA rules on civilian ownership apply.
